Artist Lacks Exhibit
Emotions, moods, and fleeting moments are so difficult to capture on canvas that many artists avoid doing portraits. For one self made artist, portraits are everything, and he displays his works in his Marion home, where he lives with his wife. With “Faces,” a huge montage, he captured the faces of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. He does it by capturing pictures from videos, which can create really funny faces. The montage is a tribute to the people who influenced him as he worked on it for a year and a half. The rest are filled with portraits of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. He does most of his work in pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He tried conte crayon and then colored pencils. His first drawing with colored pencils is of himself and his wife, a native of Kobe, Japan, at their wedding. It gave him a chance to experiment with combinations of traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print. He uses personal and Japanese symbols to further decorate his version of their wedding photograph, taken at City Hall in December 1996. Though not present at the actual wedding, he included their three cats. The artist drew one cat’s face to resemble a mask from a Japanese opera believed to chase away evil spirits. Another cat is supposed to represent good luck, and he drew it in the proper position. The couples are dressed in kimonos in the drawing. The kikyo is his wife’s floral matriarchal symbol, which he uses to decorate her. Outside the room, past the third cat that is behind the vertical blinds, is a gingko tree. The 1997 drawing is the couple’s first collaboration. He left it to his wife to think up and test new things. According to the wife, the drawing means so much to them. He would be delighted if he could conquer landscapes, as long as he can insert the figures he likes to draw so much. A traditional exhibit is not needed for his art, as his pieces have made their way into and on the cover of books. It was a staff member who presented his work to the book editor. He was sent an email by the editor, commending him for his technique, combination of portraiture with architecture, and blend of intelligence and humor. As a kid, he drew mostly action heroes and rock stars, and he has traveled far since those days. His skills are so refined that he can portray on paper any image or impression. He says its better than taking a picture, because you can add or change things.
